Sotheby’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels And Noble Jewels Featuring Blue Diamonds

Breaking old tradition may turn into something exciting this year. Traditional, Christie’s and Sotheby’s have usually followed each other for auction dates. They used to do them consecutively. This year, Sotheby’s decided to hold its normal auction a day later on November 15th, while on the 14th they will hold another auction called “Royal Jewels from Bourbon Parma Family”.

Nevertheless their auction will be as excited due to some rare blue diamonds that will be featured, as well as some other exciting items.

A true rarity in auction would be this 2.02 carat, Fancy Intense Blue Diamond with an Internally Flawless clarity. It is most likely the only one available on the market right now, and we may not see another one for a long time. A true investment potential. It is valued at $2 million to $3 million or $1 million to $1.5 million per carat. Due to its rarity, the price will definitely be at the high end of the valuation. We may even get surprised and go over the high estimates by Sotheby’s.

Another extraordinary diamond is this 2.00 carat Fancy Deep Bluish Green Diamond. It has a strong and unique color, and is quite rare, a perfect fit for a collector. It is valued at $1.6 million to $1.8 million or $800k to $900k per carat.

A 7.37 carat, Fancy Intense Orangy Pink with a VS1 clarity is also being offered. It is valued at $2.2 million to $4.2 million or $298k to $570k per carat. Sotheby’s estimate is quite extreme in terms of valuation. Let’s remember that the moment there is an orangy secondary color, the value is usually half of that of its pure color intensity, meaning from Fancy Intense Pink. The last few Fancy Intense Orangy pinks have also went unsold at auction, both in December 2017 as well as in June 2017.

A 5.04 carat, Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond is being offered. It is disappointing to see that it is an SI1 clarity (clearly seen on the table). It is valued at $9 million to $12 million or $1.786 million to $2.38 million per carat. Although it is a 5 carat in size, but the clearly seen SI1 will put pressure on the diamond. Let’s see what happens. An important element to its success is also the fact that the certificate is over 5 years, which should have been updated. This effort and request should have been pressed by Sotheby’s onto the seller prior to listing.

A 21.19 carat, Fancy Light Pink with a VVS2 clarity and type IIa diamond is valued at $4.5 million to $6.5 million, or $212k to $307k per carat, a nearly 50% gap between the low and high valuation. The certificate is also more than 5 years old and should have been updated.

They saved the best for last in my opinion. The pair of beautiful earrings are featuring a pair of Fancy Vivid Blue diamonds, fit for a princess.

The 2.61 and 3.06 carats, Fancy Vivid Blue, pear shape, with a VS2 clarity for both are mounted with brilliant and baguettes diamonds. Both diamonds have had their certificate updated to earlier this month. The one element that we have to account for is the depth. One having 73.5% depth and the other one 81.9% depth, makes this pair heavy, while giving them a smaller look. This will be a strong element in the price. The pair of earrings is valued at $8 million to $10 million or $1.41 million to $1.76 million per carat. This is a heavy price to pay for such a pair, even though they are rare as a pair. This would make sense only for someone willing to hold them for quite some time and see price increase due to rarity of Fancy Vivid Blue diamonds continuing as no supply is available (new supply from mother earth).

We are looking forward to participating and reporting back after the auction in just a few weeks.
