Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels To Feature Largest Vivid Pink Diamond In Its Category

Christie’s auction house has just revealed that on November 15, at its Magnificent Jewels Auction in Geneva, it will offer the fifth largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever to be sold at auction among many other unique and rare pieces. Christie’s will also feature a full collection by Boehmer et Bassenge Paris. The catalog, which has been released ahead of Sotheby’s catalog, is full of interesting and valuable pieces of jewelry, including some very special fancy color diamonds. Some of the highlights include two pink diamonds, an orangy yellow diamond, a diamond that was cut from the Star of Sierra Leone, and a magnificent pair of colorless diamond earrings.

Fancy Vivid Pink

The 9.14 carat Fancy Vivid Pink VS2 pear shaped diamond up for auction is the most important jewel of the evening. It is the fifth largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever to be featured at auction, but it is the largest ever offered within its own sub-category of 5-10 carat pink diamonds sold at auction. It is currently valued by Christie’s for a final sales price between $16 million – $18 million, or $1.75 million to $1.97 million per carat.

Even if it sold for its highest estimated price, it still would not break the world record paid for a Fancy Vivid Pink diamond. That record is currently held by the “Unique Pink”, a diamond that was sold recently in Geneva by Sotheby’s for over $31.56 million. However, if the 9.14 carat diamond sold at its top price, it would then break the record for total price paid for a Fancy Vivid Pink in its 5-10 carat category.

The diamond to beat for this category is the 8.41 carat Fancy Vivid Purplish Pink diamond that was sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong for a total of $17.78 million on October 7, 2014.

Some of the most unique pear shaped fancy color diamonds to be sold at auction, are “The Orange” and “The Winston Blue”. “The Orange” is a 14.82 carat Fancy Vivid Orange diamond that was sold in November 2013 for a total of $35.5 million, also in Geneva.

“The Winston Blue” is a 13.22 carat Fancy Vivid Blue diamond which sold in May 2014 for $23.8 million, also in Geneva! Both were sold by Christie’s, which has historically sold unique diamonds for record prices throughout history.

Another sweet pink diamond that will be offered at this auction is a 4.18 carat Fancy Pink VS1 diamond that is also pear shaped. It is being valued at a price between $800k to $1 million, or $191k to $239k per carat. The price is not a world record estimate, but definitely a stable one. Most recently, a 3.05 carat Fancy Pink failed to sell in a June auction by Bonham’s, so the destiny of this diamond remains to be seen.

Fancy Vivid Orangy Yellow

A unique 10.30 carat Fancy Vivid Orangy Yellow IF octagonal step cut diamond will be offered at this auction. This magnificent diamond is being estimated to sell at a price between $2 million – $3 million, or $194k to $291k per carat. The depth of color is quite unique, similar to that of a zimmi yellow diamond, but it is different because it has a secondary color (Orangy). Zimmi Yellow diamonds, which are diamonds that originate from the zimmi region of Sierra Leone, are unique as to the depth of color, and in addition are rarely seen in the market. The prices paid for a zimmi yellows are well above those paid for top Vivid Yellow diamonds in the market, especially for ones over 10 carats in size. An IF clarity makes this diamond that much rarer, so we eagerly anticipate the final results of this diamond when it goes under the hammer.

One of these was a 22.27 carat pear shaped diamond, named “Star of Sierra Leon VI”. It was sold on December 26, 1973, on the day after Christmas. The owner had requested that Harry Winston re-polish it to perfection, resulting in its current weight of 21.69 carats. It has been owned by same individual ever since.

Currently they are estimated to be sold for $20 million to $30 million, or a combined $194k to $291k per carat (a total of 103.02 carats between the 2 pieces).
