On November 27, 2018, Christie’s will be having its usual Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels, only this time, things are not that usual! The attention getter, at least for me, is the 2 carat, round Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond. The other amazing thing is the fact that a true variety of unique Fancy Color Diamonds will be offered to the public; from blue to pink to yellow and green.

My assessment this time around will start from the most valuable piece being offered to the lesser valued goods that I found to be special.

A 2.10 carat, Fancy Vivid Blue, brilliant round, which is the rarest and most desired shape and intensity for blue diamonds, and nothing less than perfection with its Internally Flawless clarity is being valued at $3.9 million to $6.5 million or $1.857 million to $3.095 million per carat. Even if the diamond sells for the low end of the valuation, this will be a new world record for the 1-3 carat sub-category for Fancy Vivid Blue (both total price and per carat price). Feel free to find another similar diamond on the market! if the price ends up being more than $2.3 million per carat, it will also hold the same record for a Vivid Blue Diamond up to 5 carat in size (per carat value only). The current record holder for the highest per carat in the 1-3 carat sub-category is a 2.31 carat, Fancy Vivid Blue diamond which was sold in Geneva in November 2016.

A beautiful pair of earring with a 5.21 carat, Fancy Pink, pear shape with an Internally Flawless clarity and a 5.01 carat, Fancy pink, pear shape and a VS1 clarity are being valued at $3.8 million to $4.5 million total or $372k to $440k per carat. From current market conditions and rarity to find a pair of 5 carat Fancy Pink, I would say that the price will be at the top of the valuation if not breaking it altogether.

Important Note:

After the article was written, and careful review and research of the pair, it is clear that this pair is the same and exact as the pair that was offered and declared SOLD last year during a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong on October 3, 2017 (confirmed by GIA certificates). It was lot #1852, and was shown in a different setting. They were valued at $3.8 million to $5.1 million. Back then, they were declared sold for $5.114 million total ($500k per carat). Yet after a review on the Sotheby’s website, they were in the unsold items area. Normally this would be the case, if the buyer did not end up paying for the item, which the auction house does not take any responsibility. What is interesting though is the fact that in order to bid on these, the buyer had to have a special, high value paddle, and to have been carefully vetted by the auction house as somebody that can afford such items.

Another true rarity is this 1.63 carat, round brilliant, Fancy Vivid Greenish Blue diamond with a VS2 clarity. An accompanied letter by GIA from 2012 describes the rarity of such a diamond. It is valued at between $2.5 million to $3.8 million or $1.533 million to $2.331 million per carat. This is a true collector’s item to be added to any upscale and rare collection.

Another beautiful Fancy Color Diamond is this 5.02 carat, Fancy Pink Diamond with an Internally Flawless clarity. It is valued between $1.64 million to $2.3 million or $327k to $458k per carat.

A 2.04 carat, Fancy Intense Purplish Pink, Rhomboid step-cut shape, with a VS2 clarity is being offered in a unique setting surrounded by 12 blue diamonds. Christie’s have tested only a sample of the blue diamonds and confirms that they are natural, yet they did not confirm all are natural blue diamonds. The valuation of the ring is set between $800k to $1.1 million in total. By the valuation of the auction house, the price would reflect that all blue diamonds are natural, otherwise, a 2 carat, Fancy Intense Pink diamond would not be valued at such a high price.

I would have personally preferred if the valuation would be in a way to determine the inability of the auction house to confirm that all the diamonds are of natural color. Alternatively, set a value based on the known facts and not the theoretical ones. I would say that buyers and investors rely on the auction house to give as much information as possible and to reflect their valuation on facts only.

A 30.18 carat, Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond with a VVS2 clarity by Harry Winston is being offered for a value between $800k to $1.2 million or $26.5k to $39.8k per carat. Yellow diamonds have been stagnating for the last two years or so, except for unique fancy vivid yellow of high quality. Let’s see what this ring brings home.

A 7.48 carat, Fancy vivid Yellow in a well desired Rectangular cut, with an Internally Flawless clarity and excellent polish and symmetry is offered and valued between $750k to $1 million, or $100k to $133.7k per carat. As mentioned above, we have seen unique Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamonds hold strong prices and increasing trend over the last 3-4 years.

A rare, 1.53 carat, Fancy intense Green with a VS1 clarity and cut corner rectangular shape, signed Tiffany & Co. is valued at between $700k to $1 million or $457k to $653k per carat. This is a very much, overpriced, diamond. I am just wondering to what extent, the Tiffany Brand is valued here. I don’t think this ring will reach the minimum reserve. This one will go back home. I wonder what is Christie’s relying on for this value?

The only way this diamond will sell is if a Fancy Color diamond expert is seeing a potential upgrade to a Fancy vivid Green, and that, we will know after the auction.

Another beautiful pair of earrings with a matching 0.73 carat, Fancy Vivid Pink with a VS1 and VS2 clarities, is valued at between $600k to $800k or $411k to $548 per carat. It will be very interesting to see what will happen.

A nice combination of Fancy color Diamonds are placed togeth on this ring. It contains three Fancy Color Diamonds; a 1.92 carat, Fancy Vivid Yellowish Orange with a VS2 clarity, a 0.47 carat, Fancy Deep Bluish Green with SI2 clarity and 0.40 carat, Fancy vivid Purplish Pink with an I2 clarity. The ring is valued at between $550k to $750k. Based on the breakdown of the three Fancy Color Diamonds, I do not see any Investment potential here, only a beautiful ring. When broken down, the three diamonds do not have much Investment value due to the low clarity grade.

Here we have a unique design for a Fancy Intense Blue Diamond. It is a 2.03 carat, pear modified brilliant shape, VVS2 clarity and excellent polish. What disturbs me in this diamond is the fact that on the certificate, the color distribution is not even. This is worrisome, and will affect the value. It is currently valued at between $500k to $780k or $246k to $384k, which is low, but justified due to the uneven color distribution

This 1.79 carat, Fancy Pink Diamond with an Internally Flawless clarity is set in a ring and valued at between $320k to $440k or $179k to $246k per carat. It is valued correctly and the only investment value left here is if the buyer will hold on to it, and wait for pink diamonds to be rarer than they are today.

The last item I wish to share with you is this 0.44 carat, Fancy Vivid Pink diamond with SI1 clarity surrounded by colourless diamonds. It is valued between $125k to $190k or $284k to $432k per carat.

I am quite happy to see the continuous exposure of Fancy Color Diamonds in auctions, and not always high valued. the beauty of Fancy Color Diamonds is only growing in appreciation by both investors and collectors. I look forward to reporting back to you the results after the auction.
